Park cameras, keyless entry, and network connectivity for the City of Mequon

The City of Mequon awarded AdvaTech Security the contract to add Axis video surveillance, electronic access control, and network and internet connectivity at three park pavilions: the Sommers Pavilion at River Barn Park, and the South Rotary and Reuter Pavilions at Rotary Park.

The challenge

In April 2026, Mequon's Park and Open Space Board named connectivity, cameras and keyless entry at Rotary Park its highest-priority park project, followed by the same improvements at River Barn Park.

Pavilion renters were let in with physical keys, so city staff had to drive to each pavilion to lock and unlock it. The city also wanted to deter vandalism, unauthorized use, and theft, and to have video when an incident does happen.

The cameras had to cover more than the buildings: parking lots, playgrounds, athletic fields, paths, and the park grounds around them. Several camera locations are out on the park grounds, which is why the bid called for camera poles, trenching, and wireless links.

The solution

The city bid the work publicly in June 2026 as the 2026 3 Park Location Video and Access Control project, and the Common Council approved the contract with AdvaTech Security on August 12, 2026.

AdvaTech already provides the city's security cameras and keyless entry at other city facilities. Keeping the parks on the same platform means one system to manage and maintain, and the new sites connect to the security network the city already runs.

The camera layouts in the city's staff report place 4K 360° multi-sensor Axis cameras on poles so a single mount covers the ball diamonds, pavilions, playgrounds, and parking lots around it. Remote poles are fed with buried cable, and wireless links fill in where a direct network path isn't available.

What we installed

  • Axis video surveillance at all three pavilions, with panoramic and AI-enabled cameras
  • Four 24-foot galvanized camera poles on concrete foundations: one at River Barn Park, one at the South Rotary Pavilion, and two at the Reuter Pavilion
  • Electronic access control at main entrances and restrooms, with video intercoms, credential readers, keypads, and electronic locks
  • A recording server with local recording and central management of the cameras and doors
  • Underground direct-burial network cabling, plus wireless point-to-point links where a direct cable path isn't available
  • Cellular internet routers at each pavilion, with network switches, UPS battery backup, and surge protection
  • Programming, testing, staff training, and commissioning

Our crew works from a towable boom lift to mount the cameras at the top of the poles, with the AdvaTech van and truck staged nearby and cones out.

Handover and what the city expects

Under the contract, work could start after August 17, 2026, and is to be complete by November 9, 2026. AdvaTech is coordinating with city staff on installation, programming, testing, and commissioning. Once the system is complete, the city expects:

  • Renters get secure access to the pavilions without staff driving out to lock and unlock.
  • Access permissions can be changed when needed, and electronic access records improve accountability.
  • Cameras watch the pavilions, parking lots, playgrounds, athletic facilities, and paths, with video to document vandalism or unauthorized use.
  • Network and internet connectivity that can support future smart-facility technology.
  • One consistent standard across three of the city's major park rental facilities.
