Security systems for schools

Photo from Axis Communications.

One controlled main entrance. Staff see and talk to the visitor before the door releases. AdvaTech Security installs that entrance for schools in southeastern Wisconsin. The pattern is the one Axis lays out for primary and secondary schools: the office controls the front door, then access control and cameras cover the rest of the building. Axis: K-12, primary and secondary schools.

Front-door video intercoms

The main entrance uses a video intercom. We install Axis network intercoms and 2N IP intercoms. Video and audio are at the door. An answering unit or a phone is in the office. The door releases only after staff verify the visitor. The stations below are the door units from those two lines. We match the unit to the entrance.

Axis network intercoms

2N IP intercoms

Product photos from Axis Communications and 2N. Each photo opens that product page. A 2N station can also carry a reader, call the office by SIP, or register to Teams. Extra 2N functions use a Gold license. The Teams license is separate.

Microsoft Teams

2N IP intercoms can register to Microsoft Teams through the SIP gateway. Office staff answer the door on the Teams desktop app, a Teams phone, or the Teams mobile app, and can unlock the door from the Teams dialpad. The intercom can call a Teams user who has a phone number, or a call queue. 2N integration hub: Microsoft Teams.

The Teams call is audio. 2N states that the Microsoft SIP gateway only supports audio calls. Video stays on the intercom and the camera system.

A Teams license is required per device and is not included in a standard Gold license. 2N recommends a Microsoft Teams Shared Device license, and the intercom needs 2N OS 2.46.1 or newer.

2N integration with MS Teams: the video is 2N’s 2022 walkthrough of a different connection, the CyberGate app. The school office uses the SIP gateway. That call is audio. Video stays on the intercom and the camera system.

Access control and cameras

Cards, fobs, and schedules cover the rest of the building, including who can be inside after hours. Cameras cover the entrance, the office, and the lot. The same installer handles the intercom, the door, and the cameras.

What this covers

  • Remote check of the visitor at the main door, before the lock releases
  • Cards, fobs, and schedules on the other doors
  • Cameras on the entrance, the office, and the lot
  • One company for the intercom, the door, and the cameras

Christ Alone Lutheran School in Thiensville.

We now have complete video surveillance, controlled access, plus remote access to the system.

Our local police department mentioned how impressed they were with what we had in place for a security system.

I can’t tell you how thrilled we are to be in partnership with the AdvaTech team. I look forward to many years of working together to keep our students safe.
